Series: Long Journey
This journey was defined by contrasts. The exhibition title “Opposites” could not have been more fitting, even though it was originally meant to refer only to the conceptual themes of my artworks. We had expected a golden autumn and instead were greeted by days of storm and heavy rain. We arrived as a duo full of storm and urgency and were forced to experience real island life. And then there were those sudden breaks in the weather front, when the beach, bathed in glaring sunlight, suddenly became the best place in the world. A glass of rosé with friends who had traveled from Hamburg-Rahlstedt, and our smiles instantly grew wider.
The bright moments were rare, and we promised ourselves to earn them again next year. The deserted island felt intimidating at first, yet at the same time it warmed us deeply through the people we met. Fast, intense, and perhaps lasting for a long time. Unexpectedly, we were welcomed into the island community and suddenly felt like part of it. In the end, this island is simply a small village, and its residents decide whether you are a friend or a stranger.
Everything turned out differently, and our ability to improvise was put to the test. In between all of this, a collection of stories emerged: helpfulness, closeness, long nights, music on dirt roads, humor, frustration, and exhaustion. That feeling that even difficult days eventually become memories you would not want to miss. And a friendship that was able to continue growing.
